Lieutenant Frederic Henry, an American, has elected to enlist in the Italian armed force as an emergency vehicle driver during World War I. The original opened in the late harvest time of 1916 in the Italian Austrian Bordertown of Gorizia.
The Italians are postponing a vicious assault the colder time of year. Throughout the break, Henry goes on leave, visiting clamoring urban areas and massage parlors on the proposal of his dearest companion, Lieutenant Rinaldi, a specialist.
When he returns, Henry takes note that nothing has changed in his nonattendance. Rinaldi is glad to have his companion home and takes him to meet the British attendant he professes to have experienced passionate feelings for Catherine Barkley. Catherine and Henry interface quickly, regardless of how Catherine is as yet grieving her life partner, killed fighting in France.
To occupy themselves, they strike up a game in which they profess to be enamored. Battling resumes and, while Henry is on a mission at the front, a channel mortar detonates, killing one driver in a split second and intolerably injuring another.
Henry attempts no end to save the harmed driver. However, it is pointless. Two different officers drag Henry away and load him onto an emergency vehicle. Henry's legs are harmed, and he needs a medical procedure, so he is shipped off an emergency clinic in Milan.
While the principal specialists guarantee that it will be long before they can work on him, a strong Italian specialist consents to do the medical procedure the following day. The activity works out well, and Henry stays in Milan to recuperate.
Unintentionally, Catherine has been positioned at a similar emergency clinic, allowing their sentiment an opportunity to bloom. While Henry is in recovery, his sentiment with Catherine develops into an energetic love. Regardless of contracting jaundice toward the finish of his emergency clinic stay, Henry is sent back to the front.
Before he leaves, Catherine reports that she is pregnant. She dismisses Henry's engagement proposition, saying that she feels wedded and needn't bother with a service. Much has changed when Henry gets back to the front. Rinaldi, who was once beguiling and lively, has become dim and severe.
His prodding of the anonymous person known as "the minister" has changed from a fun-loving exchange to a terrible shock. He has seen a lot in this conflict, and his brain is marginally befuddled by syphilis. Also, the Italian armed force is doing inadequately in the conflict.
They have experienced incredible misfortunes, and separation has spread across the positions, even officials. During a hostile strike, the German armed force effectively broke the Italian line, causing a retreat. Confusion emits as Italian fighters start discarding their weapons in the expectation of finishing the conflict.
During the retreat, Henry's emergency vehicle stalls out in the mud, and he shoots and kills an Italian sergeant who resists his orders. As the Italians arrive at the boundary, fight police show up and cull officials off the mark for addressing. Individually they are shot. Henry escapes by hopping into a stream and swimming to security.
Wearing acquired non-military personnel clothing, he sneaks onto a train and goes to the town of Stresa, where he is brought together with Catherine. Hanging out in a lodging, Henry discovers that the fight police have found him and expect to capture him.
Catherine and Henry board a boat and column to nonpartisan Switzerland in a tricky rainstorm, 35 kilometers (around 22 miles) away. After keeping away from capture by watch officials, the couple spends a brilliant winter stowed away in the mountains.
In the spring, Catherine starts giving birth. Following an extended and anguishing night, she conveys a stillborn child. A couple of hours later, she hemorrhages and kicks the bucket. Alone, Henry heads back home from the clinic in the downpour.
